TR6 Engine recon
For my sins I have agreed to rebuild next door’s TR6 engine, its been sat around since the mid 1980’s and filled with oil to stop it seizing. That oil was like sludge, stank and made a right mess.
The good news its having stripped it down, the bores look okay (subject to better inspection) and one can see the hone marks from the last time it was rebuilt (not sure when). The pistons are plus 30, and rings will need replacing, but otherwise they look like a good clean will bring them up fine.
The crank is already ground to plus 10, the journals don’t seem to have any deep score marks so a light polish should suffice. So sometime in the next two weeks the block is off to a engine shop for a good clean, including the oil galleries. A re hone (assuming the bores are okay). I will also drop off the crank for its polish and a good wash as well.
It is all heavy stuff when compared to a Viva engine, and lifting that crank back in will be a two man operation. It also appear Rimmer Brothers will be getting some business soon.
Here are some images of the dirty oily parts as striped down today.
