TR6 Engine build
I have started the engine build on the TR6, I have not progressed very far, as it is, in that measure everything stage.
Never having worked on an engine where everything is available off the shelf, I am somewhat in luxury. With Viva’s its a matter of checking the old parts and re-using what you can (not bearings), in the case of the TR6, “You want a widget sir, no problems, overnight postage as well”. Spoilt these Triumph folks.
So far the block has been acid dipped, honed, checked , new core plugs and painted.
The first big job was to check the thrust on the crankshaft, so in went the bearings with a drop of LM grease to lube it all up whilst I laid the crank in for testing.
The movement with the old Standard bearings was 0.18mm or 7 thou if you like it in Old English. I also checked the thickness of the old STD thrust bearings, they are exactly on standard size. The book says 6 – 8 thou is the right amount of slack, so jobs a good one. Yes I did a video of me checking the end float. Clunk clunk!
No a lot done so far, but its a big beast and I am going to take my time with it. I might even attempt some “Plastigauge” on the mains and big ends.
