Its all a roller-coaster with Viva’s one day you love them one day you hate them. Yesterday I hated my car and wanted to never see it again, today I don’t hate the car as much and possible actually like it. although I am not ready to admit it.
Yesterday I decided I was well (bit of man flu) and able to flush the oil out of Marvin and put in some nice new Duckhams Q, so 1/. Start the car, warm it up with a drive round the block, 2/. Flush oil out, 3/. Put in new oil. Its an easy plan so what can go wrong? OHHHH lots
So there I am starting the car, I blip the throttle and the engines screams, I lift off and the engine revs faster, I push the choke in, it revs harder and harder, I switch the key off and the engine dies…..
I get out and inspect how it happened and spot the throttle cable was leaning against the exhaust manifold and it melted causing it to jam the carb wide open…. AHHH bugger.
I re-adjust the cable so its no longer welded to the exhaust manifold and check to see its free moving and it appears so. I check the oil, seems okay no BITS in it! phew…
So this time, I start the car using the remote starter button on the solenoid and just use the throttle by hand, by-passing the pedal and cable, … Okay its starts but OMG its now making terrible noises, clicks clacks, scratches and whines… For Gods sake I’ve just screwed the engine in Marvin AGAIN…..I slam the bonnet walk away from the car and sit back and really look hard at this car, what has the car done for me?
At this point I decide to sleep on it and look again tomorrow.
So this morning I spent some time (read laying down next to car knackered, after having been to shed to get a battery and walking back to car) looking at the nightmare of yesterday.
I took the fan belt off the car and started the car, it sounded better! I removed the dynamo and it clicks when turned by hand in either direction, so I put another one on car (then took a 2 hour rest, some in car asleep, some in kitchen making the same cup of tea three times over) .
I also checked the water pump and it was very stiff so I took one off another engine and had another rest (slept in front room with TV remote in hand, not even switched TV on!).
I Re-started the engine and it is still tappets from hell but runs a lot lot better, as the car got warm the tappets reduced in noise to just a badly adjusted car.
Not out of the woods yet, but might just need tappets doing and oil flush and it MAY last this season (all it was planned for) ??
