leave well alone
You know how things go with old cars, one step forward several backwards… Yet again the tappets on Marvin’s engine are defeating me, spent all of yesterday and some of this morning tweaking then, to end up with a rattling engine that is worse than previously?
I am really confused over these things. There are two possible settings for Vivas 8 thou all around or, 6 thou and 10 thou for earlier engines. As my engine is a Heinz 57 its not possible to say which setting works best, all I can say is after setting then to 8 thou they rattle, set them to 6 & 10 they rattle more, set them back to 8 thou they rattle even more. So basically I am confused as to what to set them to? I could just do them by ear, but last time I did that I broke a rocker stud!
That’s not all that is annoying, I have just noticed that the Webber DCD has been leaking badly from the spindle shafts on both bottom butterfly’s its causing the engine to rev up, when I close the throttle for a second or two. It sounds to me like the leaking fuel is not only coming out the ends of the shafts its also draining down into the manifold and feeding the engine.
It looks like the 175 is the way forward now, as after some reading on how one cure throttle shaft leaks on Webber DCD one things its now scrap. So over this week the Webber will come back off again and either the 175 will go on once I work out a throttle linkage and or the faithful but massively underpowered Solex 30iz will go back on.
last on the list of woes is the top hose has split at the top and water is leaking out, so I need one of those and I don’t have a spare right now. Thank god I still have 13 days till race day as its lots to cure before I can make things better.
