I hate the smell of old oil, tonight after I got home I stripped down the 1159 engine I got on Saturday, and thinking ahead I drained it of oil first. The old oil was more like sludge, it smelt of oil and petrol it was frankly disgusting. This is by far the dirtiest engine I have ever seen.
After the oil was drained (or so I thought) I flipped it upside down on the work bench and removed the sump. To my horror the sump was about 1″ thick in thicker sludge. the whole interior was black as the ace of spades, and all the crank camshaft con-rods were thick in sludge and dried on old oil.
I did manage to strip it down to a bare block, and it will go off for new cam bearings and a hone, but it appears most of the sticky horrible mess has stuck onto me… Off for a long hot bath and lots of smelly things to make me smell sweet again.
Later this week I shall drop this block off at the workshop for an acid dip, and wash, along with the 1256 block I collected on Sunday. That block needs re boring to +0.060″ to match the pistons from the old 1256.
Lots to do and organise before then, mainly making me feel human after that god awful oily mess.
