4HA Axle updates
Funny how attitudes change, before christmas I popped over to Coventry Transmission with the 4HA axle from http://www.ianjemison.co.uk in York. On my First trip over I was told the axle was a write off and the dirt and grit inside it would damage it beyond repair. We stood and argued over the whole nature of exactly what it was I wanted them to do, after a few minutes I gave up repacked the car and drove away thinking “do they want the work or don’t they?”.
Today I borrowed the steam cleaner from Retropower (test drove the new one in fact) and proceeded to power wash the axle to within an inch of its life with 100 degree water and lots of foam.
One could say a dinner could be eaten off the insides, but I doubt it would sit very well on the dinner table. Anyway I digress, after I repacked the car, I popped over to Coventry Transmission’s and it was like talking to a pair of soft cuddly puppies. Happy to assist and will ing to do the work.
They are going to look for a 3.54 crown wheel and pinion and let me know next week what they have in stock (maybe a 3.7) if they don’t have what I want we will continue to use the 3.3 ratio sets I have already.
In other news, I bought a new clutch for the Lotus engine, which is a very necessary item and not one i want to skip lightly over (as its hard to get it in and out when these things break). To that end I have opted to swap the flywheel out for a lightened steel Esprit Turbo flywheel (all in 5kg with Dowels). This allows me to run the full Esprit Turbo clutch setup and a modified 9 inch friction disc that mates with the Toyota gearbox (good for 300bhp I am told). It wasn’t cheap, but then I gave up adding up a while back.
